Day One of the 30-Day Challenge

This is day one of our 30-Day Digi-Scrap Business Challenge. In this challenge I’m simply asking our readers to post one business tip per day for the next 30 days. A tip that will assist your fellow digi-scrap professionals. This event is a simple collaborative writing project that I’ll summarize for easy access when you need a little nudge or a new idea for your digi-scrap business now and in the future! Participate by leaving your comments here or posting your tips on your own blog and linking back to hear so we all can jump over to your website and see what’s happening there too.

Participants Gain Extra Momentum

Remember - I’ll personally add a comment to your your blog postings for this project and attach it to social bookmarking or social networking sites as well! A little love can drive tons of traffic to your site, my friends! Every time an article on this site has been ”Stumbled” or “Digged” - we had more than 100 new visits to DSD-Pro!  So as I’m passing this little benefit on to your, I sure would appreciate it if you took a minute to reciprocate the socializing. :)  What traffic comes my way, may come back to you as well!

My Digi-Scrap Business Tip for the First Day of this Challenge:

Know that a web presence is extremely important in today’s business world.  This is especially true for anyone working in the digital scrapbooking industry.  Make sure you have a way for your customers to touch base with you online!  Using a dedicated domain for yourself is more powerful than using a free service for your blogs, websites, forums, or stores.  I highly recommend you get your own domain name and build you a web presence on it.  If you are looking for an unexpensive web host I recommend Blue Host.  With their service you get a free domain name, tons of space and they also have the many major web-products free with an easy-to-use installer.  Products they have free in their package includes blogs, e-commerce shopping carts, community forums, and lots more!

Your Mini-Tasker is to Email a New Member of Your Website

Create a great impression upon a brand new member to your forums, wiki, store, or blog by choosing a member that is new and emailing them to thank them for their membership, comment, or order.

I’m not talking about making sure your canned auto-message goes out to them.  I mean sit down and actually write a personal note to them.  It might not sound like the most profound tip but this is one of the main strategies used by small business owners to build up website audiences.

When you do it the chances of the person that you email coming back to your website again increases significantly. Get them to come back to your site once and you increase the chances of them coming back again… and again…. So email one of your newbies now, thank them for signing up or commenting and tell them that you’re looking forward to further interactions.

Make sure you include a link back to your website so they know who you are and make the email relevant to them.  (ie. answer a question they asked, add to their comment in some way, or mention the website or the hobbies/interests that they may have listed on your sign up form).

This simple tip takes just a moment to do but can create a loyal long time member. Do it at least once a day and you’ll build your website stronger consistently over time.

Follow this Tasker to Benefit in at Least Two Ways:

1. Loyal Members and Readers Spread the Word - In many cases a single member quickly becomes numerous loyal members because they like to spread the word. They do this through their own blogs, word of mouth and social networking sites, etc.

2. Loyal Members Build Page Views - One loyal reader can potentially view your website hundreds (if not thousands) of times. A daily visit from that reader for a year brings an extra 365 page views to your website.  Page views equal more power in the search engines!  Gain an extra loyal member every day for a full year and the numbers start to add up.

While there’s nothing wrong with attracting thousands of new members to your website quickly - the majority of times they’ll come and go very quickly. Build loyal members one by one on a daily basis and your business can become a lot more fruitful in the long run.

Feel free to grab the graphic in the top left of this article if you want folks to associate your tip with the 30-Day Challenge event.  But please load it to your own server.  While you’re picking up goodies subscribe to our RSS feed as well.  That way you are sure to get every tip folks leave, delivered straight to your RSS reader or your email box!

  1. Despite this being very early days at Aardvark, we will try to pass on what we can, even as we are learning.

Day 1: Do something you love. You can’t always find the perfect job and if you do, you can’t always get it. So when choosing a business, make sure it is something that inspires you. Business is hard enough without having to develop enthusiasm as well.

  2. Excellent tip David! Thanks for sharing. I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been in a job that wasn’t much fun before and it does truly take a toll on you. It’s so much better when you’re doing something you enjoy and your passionate about!

I checked out http://AardvarkScrapbooking.com today for the first time. Looks like you all are off to a good start.

I gave you a quick “Stumble” as well. Maybe that will help get you noticed a bit on the web.

Your tip got your name entered into our raffle drawing for a one-year subscription to the business or scrappy mag of your choice. Congrats!
