Career Path - Digi Scrapbook Developer

This is the fourth article in the Career Paths Article Series. Previous articles in this series include a  short series overview, an article about the career field of product design and sales, and one on consulting and training.   Today I’ll share with you information about a career field that is less web-based and more in line with face-to-face contact with your customers.

Digital Scrapbook Developer: To be a digital scrapbook developer is to use your own design elements and/or elements from purchased kits and build digital scrapbooks for your customers.  In this career field you are basically the digi-scrapper for someone else.

Professionals working in this area sometimes refer to their work as “scrap-for-hire” and they almost always work as solopreneurs - setting up individual contracts with their clients and consulting with them on a personal basis.  Completed products are delivered either printed out and assembled in a hardcopy book format or on a CD/DVD.  Although the scrapbook designer may use basic templates and page layouts, this is still a very personalized service as each project is different and will require continual communication with clients in the processes of creating their special books and filling your orders.

Designers working in this career path are now providing, not just still-shot type digital albums, but also digital products with slide show type transitions and even music/voice options included.  I’ve created this type of DVD myself and have seen some great DVD/scrapbooks for new baby and wedding memory albums, retirements, and milestone birthdays albums too.

A word of caution about copyrights here.  If you are using pre-made digi-scrap elements created by other artists, you MUST have their permissions to use their products for business use.  Read the “Terms of Use” (TOU) contract/agreement that came with your purchase.  If your kit did not include one, you should contact the artist and get their permission to use their products for your own business.  Some digi-artists are now providing business-use TOU’s.  Stay within the appropriate laws for music choices as well.

We’ve covered a lot of options here in our series so far.  But we’ve just scratched the surface of career opportunities for digital scrappers.  We’ll pick up again starting next weekend.  I’m sure you aren’t going to want to miss the next round of reviews, so pick up our RSS feed or sign up to receive email updates for our blog!
