How To Create Another Source of Income for Your Digi-Scrap Business
By PChip | Category: Business Management |30-Day Challenge Mini-Tasker: Research and review options for adding additional sources of income to your business if the situation is prime for it right now. If the situation isn’t right just yet, consider doing some planning for the future.
Ask Yourself This
Are you a website owner relying on only one source of income for your salary? Primarily selling digital designs for marketing to digi-scrap hobbyists? Maybe you’re a professional scrapper designing books for your clients? Does this activity provide you with enough income to sustain your needs? If not, how about considering adding another stream of income?
With a Website You Have Multiple Income Options
If you are a digi-scrapper in business and you don’t have a website yet - NOW is the time to get one. If you are already running a successful website that gets a pretty decent volume of traffic, you may want to consider increasing your income by launching a banner advertising campaign. The higher your traffic numbers the more interested advertisers are in tapping into your traffic. Consequently the higher the price they will pay for advertising on your site. It’s beneficial to have a proven set of solid numbers in your statistics when you want to charge higher prices for your web space, but even small numbers with high potential can still be enticing to prospective clients.
Your Time is Your Money
Remember that whenever you add another cash avenue for generating money to your business – you are going to take time away from your main creative artful activities and transfer that time into other areas for at least some period of time. In the case of banner advertising, your time may be spent on:
- Building your pricing sheet and ad campaign information pages for prospective advertisers
- Soliciting and recruiting business customers who will pay you to put their ads on your site
- Billing activities
- Ad installations
As entrepreneurs we often have this strong do-it-yourself mentality. Keep in mind though that you may not have to do all the work yourself and even if you do, there are ways to make the job easier. If you want to add this source of income to your website, but you honestly don’t wish to invest your time in these activities - outsource the pieces you don’t want to do yourself. If you are looking to accomplish the jobs yourself and you want to use your time efficiently, there are steps you can take to help you do that.
Maximize Your Time
By investing some planning time upfront and putting a few things in place from the start, you can save so much more time later down the line. So I encourage you to sit down and put together a strong plan of action before launching your campaign. Here are four quick and easy things you can do to help maximize your time well.
- Put your billing on auto-pilot by using a reoccurring or subscription based billing service. PayPal does have this service available now.
- Develop long term contracts that have an opt-in or opt-out type functionality with instant renewal built into them. So you don’t have to spend time, re-negotiating contracts with customers who already know they plan to stick around.
- Pre-code your webpage with standard file names such as “TopAd.gif”, “MiddleAd.gif”, “BottomAd.gif”. Use placeholder ads to fill these positions until you have paying adverts to use. Then when adding new banners, simply change the name of your graphic file to match the standard file name and upload it into the proper file directory (writing over your placeholder file). The new file will take the place of the old one on your webpage without you having to update the web page text each time.
- Set standard sizes for your graphical advertisements. This will keep things looking orderly on your website and let you avoid recoding web pages as well.
Three Points To Remember:
Business Tip: An advertising campaign is just one means of adding additional sources of income to your business. It’s a powerful one that can generate a nice flow of steady revenue without much continuous effort if you 1) do some good planning upfront 2) put it on auto-pilot and 3) have site traffic statistics to support advertisers needs.

Tip for Day 27: If you are going to put up a website, you will probably need a host. Some are clearly free, but come with restrictions, sometimes advertising and usually a URL to match (yourname.crazyfreewebz.etc.etc). When choosing a paid service, do a careful comparison of what is offered.
Here’s where the hint o’the day kicks in:
MS or Linux platform?
Eh? Yup - do a little research first before deciding. Linux is great for open source applications and so often comes with lots of free plug ins, like blogs, albums, forums, shopping carts…
Microsoft is Microsoft… well, at least you’ve heard of it!
And what happens when you upgrade to a bigger package and accidently swap from Linux to MS?
With 1and1.com, your website disappears and you have to wait a few days before they can turn it back. Maybe a whole month - unless you phone them until they recognize your voice and they relent and make you wait just five.
Don’t ask me how I know that one
The considerations about whether you should choose a Linux, Unix or Microsoft based webhost is a very important one. In any case 70% of hosting servers are Linux or Unix based so choosing Linux or Unix should not be a problem when upgrading that said, that is the situation right now and sometimes for certain services webhosts might prefer Microsoft over Linux, but I don’t think Linux server would give you a problem even when making a transition.
Thanks for the article and best wishes. :O)
Great tips here David. Sorry you had some problems with your server changes. Hope it all gets better soon. Thanks for sharing the tip.
