Strengthen Your Portfolio – Get Published – Get Interviewed

My Friday Quick Tip:

Being published in a highly recognized magazine can add a boost to your ego as well as your resume. Getting published by other webmasters and blog owners can also boost your business!  The same goes for professional interviews.

  • Be a guest writer on someones blog and you get higher link recognition in the search engines as well as extra traffic to your site too. If you aren’t asked for a writing gig – don’t let that keep you from asking. Almost all blog owners are open to the idea at some level or another. They may want to do an article swap with you, which results in you getting a guest writer to your blog too!
  • Podcast Interviews are another way to get recognition. Podcasting is one of the hottest things online these days. It’s just like a radio-based event, except it’s aired across the web.
  • Seek out opportunities for written reviews of your website, online store, and/or products. Maybe write a review on a product or service you’ve used before and submit your review for publication at other sites. I’m always open to these type of articles here at DSD-Pro. ;) Have you read any of Nicholes reviews?
  • Consider e-zines and public article websites as another opportunity for recognition as well. I’m currently writing four articles for these now. These are another avenue for link sharing!
  • Look at every option available whenever they are offered to you. It’s not just free publicity, it also solidifies feelings of trust and authority with your customers. Use these occasions to add a feather to your cap and more business punch to your portfolio or resume.

    Submission Guidelines for Popular Magazines

The Somerset Digital Studio submission guidelines are located near the bottom of the page where they list info for all their publications. So scroll down until you see the title for “Special Publications – Annuals”. The Digital Studio magazine is the first one of that list.

The Digital Scrapbooking Magazine has their submission info listed on the “current calls” page of their website. Pay close attention to their submission dates.

    Podcasting Opportunities

Partner Up with DiscTalkRadio and you increase your chances of a podcast. They have several types of podcasts they air. Approach them to see if there’s anything you can add to their shows.

Grab the RSS feed to our Pre-Launch blog for the DSD-Pro Business Association and you’ll hear about some upcoming podcast and screencast opportunities we’ve got heading your way also!

A Mini-Tasker to Send You On Your Way:

Take time this weekend to research some possible publication opportunities and other avenues for picking up recognition for your business and for yourself.

If you haven’t been offered the chance to write, or interview with someone you’d like to – then step up and ask for the chance. Track down a fellow web-writer who’s blog might mix well with your interests, and offer to do an article swap. Dig up the layouts and tutorials you’ve written that might fit the current needs of magazines.

Then get brave and make yourself known by jumping in there with your information!

    1. Tip for day 14: Part of our business plan is to find a series of blogs to guest write on. We are both way too busy to excel at running our own, although I did solo-write a political blog for six months. Both of us work full-time so we have to structure our business around that.

Using auto-responders, monitoring email and auto-delivery of product is one of the main reasons we chose this business. We have time here and there, but it is unpredictable. Having a business model that “runs itself” in the meantime makes it al possible.

Of course, not being there 100% is not the fastest way to build a successful business, but then we are in no rush. Slow, steady, organic growth is our aim. It makes a great fall back too should one of us lose our usual jobs.

So our tip today is to structure your business model to suit your timetable, your expectations, your mood and your financial needs.

There are many models out there – and successes in most of them. Pick the right one and jump in!

    2. Give a shout David when you two start doing your guest writing. You’ve got my email addy. Let me know when your schedule frees up and maybe we can come up with something here.

It’s great that the two of you have found a way to structure your business so it fits nicely into you already busy lives. Kudos to you for sharing the tip with us too!
